Pont de Vaux, Ain, 14.IV.1769; Novi, 15.VIII.1799.
French general, volunteer from Ain in 1791, named brigadier general on the battlefield of Loano (1795), division general in 1796. He supported Bonaparte brilliantly in the Italian Campaign of 1796 at Montenotte, Millesimo, Mondavi, and specially at Rivoli.
Successor to Brune as commander in chief in Italy (October 1798), he forced the king of Sardinia to abdicate. He resigned when the action of the civil commissioners of the Directorate seemed to him to restrict his independence.
Once again general in chief after 30 prairial, he was attacked unexpectedly by Suvarov at Novi and mortally wounded while trying to rally his army.
Before turning to Bonaparte, Sieyes has thought of Joubert to overthrow the Directorate.
