The 5th line infantry half-brigade is formed in 1796 from the 146th and 193rd battle half-brigades. Titled "5th line infantry regiment" in 1803. During the napoleonic era the regiment was under command of :
- 1800: Chef de Brigade then Colonel Francois-Antoine Teste
- 1806: Colonel Louis-Auguste-Marchand Plauzonne
- 1809: Colonel Jean-Isaac Roussille

Flags :
The regiment receives four eagles in 1804, the one of the 1st
battalion being taken by the Austrians at Caldiero. The new flag
received in 1812 is embroidered with the battle honour "WAGRAM".
