deco Kingdom of Westphalia Texte en français

separateur

Kingdom of Westphalia is created in 1807 from Hanover, Brunswick, and Hesse-Cassel by the Emperor for the benefit of his youngest brother, JEROME.

Organisation in 1808

In the beginning the westphalian army, which was made up from the franco-hessian infantry corps formed by Marshal MORTIER, included

  • the foot guard: one battalion each of grenadiers, chasseurs, and elite chasseur-carabiniers
  • the horse guard: one squadron of bodyguards, one regiment of light horse lancers with four squadrons
  • six regiments of line infantry, each three battalions
  • one regiment of cuirassiers
  • one regiment of light horse
  • two squadrons of elite gendarmes

The infantry battalions of the guard have eight companies of 80 men; those of the line, six companies of 120 men on the 1808 french model. The cavalry squadrons have about 80 men, each line regiment having four squadrons.

The peninsular campaign

At the beginning of 1809 the regiment of light horse was sent to Spain, as was the second infantry division under General MORIO. The latter included

  • 1st brigade: 2nd and 4th of the line, each with two battalions
  • 2nd brigade: 3rd of the line (two battalions), 1st light battalion

The infantry stayed in Catalonia up to 1811, at that time the cadres were repatriated to Westphalia to train conscripts. Only a single battalion remained, in which are gathered the still able-bodied soldiers of the three regiments. As for the light horse, they did not serve with the infantry but in the IVth corps of SEBASTIANI, farther south, up to end of 1813.

The 1809 campaign

In 1809 they formed

  • the 3rd light battalion
  • the 1st regiment of hussars

In April King JÉRÔME received command of the Xth corps, charged with covering north Germany. The composition of the corps follows:

  • 1st division: the three infantry battalions of the guard, the squadron of the bodyguard, three squadrons of light horse of the guard
  • 2nd division: 1st, 5th, and 6th infantry regiments, 1st cuirassiers
  • 3rd division: four regiments of dutch infantry and one regiment of dutch cuirassiers

In the course of this campaign the westphalians had serious trouble, first against the Prussian rebels of VON SCHILL, then against the brunswicker going to England.

Campaigns of Russia and Saxony

In 1810 and 1811 are created

  • the 7th and 8th line regiments
  • the 4th light battalion
  • the 2nd regiment of cuirassiers
  • the 2nd regiment of hussars

The 2nd light horse regiment raised in 1812 likely never reached his combat strength.
In Russia the westphalian army was the VIIIth corps of the Grande Armée, at first under King JEROME command, then under JUNOT. Organised at first at two infantry divisions and three cavalry brigades (including the Guard), the VIIIth corps first lost its cuirassiers brigade to the IVth cavalry corps; then three of its infantry regiments transferred to the Xth and XIth corps.
In spite of their awful upper command the westphalians behaved rather well when need arose, particularly at Borodino. They were reduced to two companies strength in the course of the retreat.
In 1813 the westphalian army did not have enough time to be reorganised; some disparate formations entered the field, particularly in the garrisons of Dresden and Küstrin. Two new units appeared temporarily at that time, the Guard's rifle (regiment of the Queen) of two battalions and the Jerome-Napoleon hussars (two, then three squadrons), of French recruitment.
After Leipzig the Kingdom of Westphalia disappeared and the remaining troops found themselves in either the Prussian army or the reconstituted one of Hesse-Cassel.
